Microsoft Defender for Cloud
Cloud and workloads

Integration Faq

In brief

The documentation now states that cloud security data supports Azure, AWS, and GCP, while onboarding and plan management currently support Azure commercial environments only. After migration, plan settings become view-only in the Azure portal, resource-level configurations are not preserved, and billing uses Defender Workload Units.

What Defender admins need to know

Review environment eligibility, configuration preservation, and billing implications before moving an Azure environment to Defender-based plan management.

Onboarding and plan management in the Defender portal currently support Azure commercial environments only. Continue to use the Azure portal to onboard and configure AWS, GCP, and on-premises environments are supported.Azure national or sovereign cloud environments. GitHub is supported separately in public preview. For setup instructions, see Create a GitHub connector.

What are the risks associated with this move?

What happens to MDC in the Azure portal? Is MDC being deprecated from the Azure portal?

We recognizeDefender for Cloud isn't being deprecated from the Azure portal. The Azure and Defender portals continue to work in parallel.

For Azure commercial environments, you can now connect environments and manage Defender for Cloud plans in the Defender portal. Continue to use the Azure portal for AWS, GCP, unsupported Azure environments, and management capabilities that MDC serves multiple personasaren't yet available in the Defender portal, including security admins, cloud security architects, workload owners, DevOps teams, policy configuration, continuous export, and more. With this release, MDCworkflow automation.

After an Azure environment moves to Defender-based plan management, its plan configuration becomes view-only in the Azure portal remains as is, and we have no plans to deprecate it. Hence, adding security for new resources continues to remain in the Azure portal. Defender portal focuses on security teams overseeing cloud security across cloud and code environments. The Azure portal continues to serve Azure-focused personas such as workload owners and DevOps engineers. Our goal is to provide tailored experiences in each portal, ensuring every persona has the most relevant tools and insights for their needs.

Will enabling this feature lead to changes or new deployments that might impact otherDoes using Defender for Cloud plans, features, or configurations in the future?Defender portal change my existing configuration?

Is there a feature parity list for all the features expanding into the Defender portal?

What if I only use the Azure portal and not the Defender portal?

The expansionYou can continue to use the Azure portal. Azure environments that haven't moved to Defender-based plan management continue to use their existing Azure portal configuration and billing model during the transition period.

Customers who use the Azure portal exclusively can continue to do so without any changes or impact.

Billing implications

Is there any billing impact with this expansion?from using the Defender portal?

What is a Defender Workload Unit?

A Defender Workload Unit (DWU) is a unified unit for measuring Defender for Cloud usage across supported protected workloads. Workload types use defined counting models, and the resulting DWU usage is used to estimate costs, calculate billing, and report cloud security costs.

For more information, see Estimate and track Cloud security cost.

Is moving to Defender Workload Unit billing mandatory?

Not at the start of now, therethe transition. The move is performed per Azure subscription. Subscriptions that haven's not moved to Defender-based plan management can continue to use their existing billing impact. Existing customers will be ablemodel during the transition period.
